We use a short-term field team approach to dental clinics which is both exciting and challenging. Field dental clinics usually consist of one or more dentists, a dental assistants, and hygienists, and support personnel for sterilizing instruments and registering patients. Because the clinics are often conducted in austere conditions (not always in a building with a roof) there is always a need for people to set up equipment, maintain a generator, and generally help keep things moving along. The host missionary and churches provide individuals who speak the language of the country to help organize those seeking dental care. Local believers present the Gospel to adults and children who come out of need or just plain curiosity.
Depending on the composition of the team there can be different emphases for each clinic. Because of this, people in different parts of the world have different dental needs for more or less extractions, fillings, or cleaning. More difficult dental procedures such as surgery, root canals, and crowns cannot usually be done due to the lack of follow-up and the lack of surgical facilities.
